Travel
Newfoundland is an island, so access is by plane or ferry.
Air
There are direct (non-stop) flights from Halifax, Toronto, Montréal, Calgary, Edmonton and Newark. Delegates travelling from Europe may connect through London (Heathrow) direct to Halifax and then to St. John’s.
NOTE: the airport destination code for St. John's, Newfoundland, is YYT. It is important to inform your travel agent of this code when making reservations; it has been known for delegates to arrive in Saint John, New Brunswick - not a happy mistake! Delegates may wish to explore seat sales through on-line travel sites, airlines flying into St. John's include Air Canada, WestJet, and Continental Airlines.
Ferry
Marine Atlantic ferries run between Sydney, Nova Scotia and two ports in Newfoundland: Port aux Basque (four and a half hour ferry ride with an eleven hour drive to St. Johns), and Argentia (fourteen hour ferry ride with a one and a half hour drive to St. Johns). Reservations for the ferry can be made by dialing 1-800-341-7981.
Currency
There are no facilities at St. Johns airport for the conversion of foreign currency. Cash transactions require Canadian dollars. In some establishments, US currency is accepted but the exchange rate is likely to be unfavorable. If paying with US$, you might want to ask what exchange rate is being charged (and have some idea yourself of the official rate). There is an ATM (Automated Teller Machine) in the 'arrivals' section of the airport.
Taxi Fare
Gullivers City Wide Taxi services the St. Johns International Airport. The fee to the Fairmont is $20. For more information, visit:
stjohnsairport.com/travelinfo/default.htm. Please note that there may be an additional charge of $3.00 (approx.) for each additional person. Most cab companies will accept credit cards, however, it would be advisable to check this with the driver first and again, if paying with US$, ask about the exchange rate.
