Tourism Information
St. Johns
St. Johns is the easternmost city in North America and one of the oldest European settlements on the continent. Its harbour, around which the city grew, has sheltered mariners for almost five centuries. The city still retains its European influence, reflected in the customs and distinctive dialects of the people.
Outside St. Johns
Outside St. Johns are towns, villages and historic sites with a charm that distinguishes them from the capital city. Plan a drive along the coast or take an afternoon boat trip and you may see whales migrating north and icebergs drifting south.
Cape Spear National Historical Site, the most easterly point in North America, is only a 15 minute drive from the city.

Thirty kilometers south of St. Johns is the Witless Bay Bird Sanctuary which has the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America. Cape St. Marys Ecological Reserve, about a four hour drive from St. Johns, is often called the most spectacular gannet nesting area on the continent. Newfoundland has been visited by more than 300 different species of birds.
Explore Newfoundlands two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: beautiful Gros Morne National Park, located on the west coast; and LAnse aux Meadows, North Americas only authenticated site of Norse settlement, on the tip of the Great Northern peninsula.
These are only a few of the more popular tourist destinations. Why not plan a holiday around the conference and bring the family? For additional information on tourism and tour operators, please call the Department of Tourism at 1-800-563-NFLD, or visit
